BIO

Painting in watercolor on location, en plein air, is Terri’s favorite challenge. Most artists choose to avoid using this unforgiving medium while working outdoors. Atmospheric lighting completely changes within 90 minutes, adding to the drama. Working vertically, Terri quickly paints, getting her adrenalin high trying to capture the moment before the moment is gone.
Terri’s experience of both city and country life shows in her work. Her appreciation for the arts and city life was fostered by trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and the vast collection of public art on display throughout the city. Her appreciation for nature was heightened by frequent hikes through the fields, woods, meadows, and creek sides surrounding her parents’ farm near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. A BFA in Studio Art brought Terri in contact with a classical art education during a time when many art students throughout the United States were denied that opportunity. She participated in the Blossom Festival School of Art, a summer long visiting art program, where juried-in students worked along internationally known artists. Janet Fish and Dale Chihuly were among the artists that influenced her most.
As current president of Plein Air Austin, Terri actively promotes painting on location. The stimulation of traveling is often seen in her work and she takes several painting trips per year. Terri has taught in art centers and out of her own studio, volunteering in public schools and community organizations in Ohio, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Texas. She wrote and illustrated a book used by Camp Nikos, a summer camp for underprivileged children from Austin and other Texas communities. In 2005, with her children grown, Terri began painting full time again.
Successful in many mediums including oil, pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, and sculpture, in studio and out, her favorite painting experiences are done in watercolor on site while responding to nature and what is happening in the community. Painting with changing light and the unforgiving medium of watercolor provide her one of the ultimate artistic challenges.
